500 Word Essay on Meaning of Film Codes in Agent Carter

The Marvel's Studio Film, Agent Carter (2013), section 00:00 - 05:06, shows all four of the film elements: camera angles and composure, mise-en-scene, sound, and editing. The combination of these elements, active and passive, contribute to the cinematic quality and emotional depth of the film. In this film specifically, this section, utilizes the sounds and lighting to deliver emotional quality to the viewer.
Camera composure and angles provide context, new perspectives, and general information about a scene to the viewer and subject in a film. In Agent Carter, an important establishing shot can be seen after the cutaway from Captain America’s previous scene. This establishing scene is important to give environmental context to the upcoming scenes. This establishes the city in which Carter works and does her job. This is important because, without this scene the viewer would have limited context on the setting of the film and the character herself.
Mise-en-scene, an important element to any film, adds to the genuineness of the characters and fictional universe that a subject could live in. In Agent Carter, the mise-en-scene, the clothing, staging, and lighting, played a huge role in the theatrical aspects to the movie. For example, the clothing that the subjects wear displays a time and place of the movie. This segment of the movie was made in 1946, a very different time for clothing and technology. For this reason, the producers must have needed to adjust clothing and the staging to accurately reflect this time and setting. This can be seen from the absence of smart technology, (phones, tablets, computers, et cetera), as this technology had not been invented yet.
The sounds edited in this film are a subtle and indirect mood-setter. For example, the establishing shot, as aforementioned, had an alarm sound that overlapped into the scene with the actual red blinking lightbulb. This signified a mission for the agents and emotional uncertainty to the scene. A few moments later into the film we hear and see this again, a leitmotif. This leitmotif, without direct mention, signified to the viewer a sense of urgency.
Editing is the finishing touch to any film. In Agent Carter, we see many aspects of color-grading, transitions, and sounds, nondiegetic and diegetic. From the film we can see very detailed color-grading to give a dramatic and warmer feeling to the film. This gives a sense of timeliness, of the past, which works perfectly in tandem with the mise-en-scene to tie the entire movie’s setting together in a realistic experience for the viewer. The transitions, as briefly discussed above, happened during the establishing shot. This transition, a contrasting edit, went from a peaceful city during sunrise to an alarm that was the opposite of peaceful. This gave the sense of uncertainty and suspense amongst the viewers.
